I know that sounds ridiculous. Don't look at me. I didn't say it.
OK, tell me what you think. Does this sound as dumb as I think it does?
Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion said on Wednesday that his party won't defeat the government on the federal budget, but also won't vote in favour of it.
"We'll find a way to not defeat the government and to express our disagreement with this budget," Dion said while leaving a caucus meeting in Ottawa on Wednesday.
The CBC extracted the best part for the headline:
We'll find a way to not defeat the government
The Liberals are going to expend time and effort to figure out a way not to defeat Stephen Harper and the Conservatives?
Right then. You get started on that, and when you figure out a way to do again what you've done several times already, you get back to us.
For any Liberals out there, this is what your party has been reduced to. Stephane Dion now publicly announces how the Liberal Party will be working hard to make sure that the Conservative government continues to implement its agenda.
Seriously, though. When the leader of your party says publicly that he is seeking ways to make sure the government of the day stands on a budget that his party disagrees with, has that crossed the line?
At some point, doesn't Stephane Dion's uncanny ability to sound ridiculous (it's hard to make priorities, NATO forces into Pakistan, Liberals will find a way not to bring down the Conservatives) make him manifestly unqualified for the job?
