Fiddling with Social Bookmarking

I know social bookmarking is all the Web 2.0 rage, but for some reason I've never been able to really tap into it in a big way. I've had one story successfully make it to the Digg front page, but like a tall weed, it was buried within 45 minutes.

But what a wild 45 minutes it was!

So I've been tweaking with the links above the search box, and here's what I've done.

  • The front page ought not to have any social bookmarking links. Those only go on the individual story pages. The same goes for the archive pages.
  • I'm displaying buttons to quickly bookmark using Digg and Reddit, or to vote for the stories if they've already been bookmarked. These seem to be the two big players when it comes to newsie webpages.
  • I'm not convinced I'll succeed with Digg, as I've heard that the politics of the major diggers is not consistent with this site. On the other hand, when I've dugg my own pieces in the past, I could usually depend on a fair number of votes (though nothing approaching what was needed to get to the front page but for that one crazy day).
  • Reddit is another site that seems to be popular. I've put it up there instead of other options like Newsvine and Del.Icio.Us, though I might switch those around again, or resize everything to allow more links if they seem useful.
  • I suspect I'm not giving enough credit for what Facebook sharing could do for me if I made it more prominent, so that button might yet make an appearance.

So if you like what I've written, feel free to pump it up on reddit and digg. Of course, nothing stops you from plugging my piece on any of the dozens of smaller players in the bookmarking game, even if I'm not providing the shortcut button. If you think I'm missing an obvious social bookmarking site that is a good fit for my pieces, let me know.
