Stephane Dion's unpaid $2,000 lunch bill

Liberal Party leader Stephane Dion would like to be prime minister one day. If he wants the job, he needs to convince Canadians that, among other things, he can be trusted to manage the country's finances.

Liberals have a particular problem in that regard, given the baggage of the Sponsorship Scandal.

A note to Stephane Dion. If you want to be trusted with our money, show us you can manage something as simple as a lunch tab. Running up a $2,000 bill with portions running over 90 days past due is not a promising sign.

Hey, regular folks pay for their lunch. It ain't some sort of entitlement.

This transcript of an amusing discussion on Mike Duffy Live:

Mike: Where was I going next? I was going next. To Stephane Dion. And his luncheon bill. (Laughter)

Tonda McCharles: speaking of cash.

Mike: Yes, yes.

Tonda McCharles: Cash owing.

Robert Fife: It's small potatoes.

Tonda McCharles: It is, however, documented.

Mike: As long as they're PEI potatoes, we don't mind. So someone in the accounting service of the House of Commons slipped to a dear pal of mine a copy of this invoice, which is addressed to the honourable Stephane Dion, and it's saying here's your lunch chit and it says much of this is over 90 days past due, and it amounts to about $2,000. As you can look here, a lot of days it was 14 bucks. Sounds like a club sandwich and a pot of coffee or whatever for lunch. But then you got down and there were a few other larger meals. And at the end of the day it comes to $2,032.88. And I was going to take up a collection, but... (Laughter) but then I thought, no, I’m sure the Liberal party is not that broke.

Tonda McCharles: I’m sure that bill's probably paid by now.

Robert Fife: After you've raised it, somebody rushed up to the Parliamentary restaurant with a cheque right now.

Tonda McCharles: Spotted Mr. Dion a couple thousand.

Robert Fife: Whoever leaked this to us knew what they were doing.

Mike: Yeah. The collection agency.

Tonda McCharles: Pay now. Pay now.

Pay now. Pay now.

Stephane Dion appears to be the sort of guy who signs off on his lunch and forgets about it. A free lunch is just another entitlement for the Liberal Party, I suppose.

Well, those days are over. No more free lunches, not even for the Liberals, even if Stephane Dion thinks otherwise.

Pay now! Pay now!
