Stephane Dion polls in third place among Canadians when asked who they would want as prime minister.
Third place!
How much more of this will the Liberal Party tolerate?
Stephen Harper is Canada's choice as prime minister.
And Stephane Dion, the Leader of the Liberal Party? Third place. Less than 1 person in 7 polled wanted to see Stephane Dion leading the government of Canada.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is soaring up as the top pick of most Canadians to lead the country, while Liberal Leader Stephane Dion has plummeted to third spot behind the NDP’s Jack Layton, a new poll has found.
The startling SES-Sun Media survey shows Harper has steamrolled ahead as the choice for “best PM” of 37% of Canadians, while Dion plunged to third place as the pick of just 13% of Canadians. Layton garnered 17% support across the country.
The results deliver the worst news for Dion, who has fallen 10 points in the last 90 days.
Harper’s popularity is growing in vote-rich Quebec, which is expected to be a key battleground in the next federal election. In that province, 41% said they think he would make the best prime minister, up from 24% three months ago.
Dion has slid to just 11% from 15% 90 days earlier in Quebec.
Just how much more will members of the Liberal Party put up with?
Stephane Dion has had a year to get things straightened out. The Liberal Party is still broke. There have been forced resignations. The caucus is openly mocked by other parties and by columnists when Stephane Dion declares government policies unacceptable and then bravely abstains from actually voting. The Toronto Star, as pro-Liberal as the media in Canada gets, has written of Stephane Dion's utter lack of credibility. The Liberal Party is no longer a viable force in Quebec -- the NDP is more likely to swing ridings between the Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois. Stephane Dion openly mused about the possibilty of raising the GST, causing Liberal MPs to groan and swear to reporters.
And now this. Stephane Dion has bled so much support that now combined, Canada's two major left-of-centre leaders cannot beat Stephen Harper's leadership numbers.
Just how much more can the NDP put up with?
