We have all read the news reports about charges facing MP Blair Wilson, elected as a Liberal but now sitting as an independent. Blair Wilson is charged with serious breaches of the Elections Act. In order to help Canadians come to their own conclusions, I'll be posting the original complaint as it was delivered to Elections Canada, in its entirety, in this series of posts.
As far as I know, the original complaint has not be made available anywhere else.
In this post, we will look at the supporting documentation that alleges to show that Blair Wilson ads in the Whistler Question but failed to report any advertising in this paper.
The seventh charge against former Liberal MP Blair Wilson under investigation by Elections Canada focuses on how advertising in the Whistler Question was accounted for:
Whistler Question: Mr Wilson did not report ads in the Whistler Question. Copies of several of his ads are enclosed. In keeping with prices at other similar papers the cost of these are can [sic] be conservatively estimated at a aminimum of $1,800.00 He ran:
- A 1/4 page ad on December 22, 2005
- A 1/4 page ad on January 5, 2006
- A 1/4 page ad on January 12, 2006
- A full page ad on January 12, 2006
- A full page ad on January 19, 2006
- It is very likely he ran ads before December 22, 2005 as he did in other papers
You can study the supporting material related to the Whistler Question advertising charge against Blair Wilson for yourself.
The evidence doesn't presented does not show ads before December 22.
The ads all have the expected text "Authorized by the Official agent for Blair Wilson".
Evidence is not provided to show what, if any, plan was developed for advertising in the Whistler Question. It might be that the decision to advertise in this paper came after Elizabeth Woods departure as campaign manager.
