During the Liberal Party leadership race, Michael Ignatieff was a polarizing figure. The frontrunner for the entire campaign, his writings and his time in the US made a lot of Liberals very nervous. One such Liberal was Marsha Akman, a low-level foot-soldier in the Liberal Party in Quebec. Marsha Akman created the StopIggy.com website, and used Liberal Party membership lists leaked to her from one of the other campaigns to contact Liberal delegates with anti-Ignatieff emails:
We are a group of longtime active members of the Liberal Party of Canada who are disturbed about Michael Ignatieff's bid for the leadership of our party. A self-styled left-of-center Liberal, Michael Ignatieff is anything but. He supports both the war in Iraq and Missile Defence/Weaponization of Space, is an apologist for torture, and is against the Kyoto Protocol. In addition, he has suggested that he would privatize Medicare. Do we want a leader who is similar to Stephen Harper in so many ways?
The site stopped being updated after the leadership convention saw Stephane Dion win. The site was not brought down, and indeed the domain registration is good until April 2008.
Only a couple of weeks ago or so, the site was still up.
Today, however, I noticed that the StopIggy content was replaced with "This site is temporarily unavailable."
So what is going on?
If the site was simply coming down, why say "temporarily"?
Is the site undergoing a facelift? New information? A new interface? Better pictures?
If so, why? Does someone think Michael Ignatieff is going to have to be stopped again? Or have Michael Ignatieff's people finally moved against the site and taken it down? But then why bother?
Unless it is because Michael Ignatieff is making a move for the Liberal Party leadership. If so, the anti-Ignatieff forces are getting ready to start the fight again, or the pro-Ignatieff forces are clearing away the distractions this time around.
It probably doesn't mean anything, of course. But if in a couple of weeks or so we are all reading about the new leader of the Liberal Party, we might remember to look at this post and say, "Yeah, the signs were there, if you were paying attention."
