Michael Ignatieff fundraiser...with puffins!

Check out the flyer that has been made and distributed by local BC Liberals to generate interest for a $200-per-plate fundraising dinner for Michael Ignatieff.

One picture of Michael Ignatieff.

Two pictures of puffins.

And one misspelling of Ignatieff's name (see at the bottom -- Ingnatieff).

The point of this dinner is to raise funds to pay down the debts incurred by Michael Ignatieff in running for the leadership of the Liberal Party, the race he lost to Stephane Dion:

He put himself forward to lead the Liberal Party and Canada last year, and in doing so he made a profound commitment to all Canadians. Canada needs leaders of Michael’s stature, abilities and vision. In order to attract and keep his caliber of leadership, we need to stand behind Michael Ignatieff for the financial obligations he made on our behalf while seeking to represent our aspirations and to lead Parliament and the country.

It is an unfortunate choice of words to talk about attracting people with Ignatieff's caliber of leadership, given the focus this week on Stephane Dion's faltering leadership of the Liberal Party, and the allegations made by Dion's people that Michael Ignatieff supporters worked to derail the Outremont by-election in order to set the stage for a coup.

As we all know, the Liberals lost their stronghold of Outremont, and in spectacular fashion.

Funny thing (besides the puffins, I mean) is that if you alter the tense slightly, this meeting could be a fundraiser for a future leadership campaign. Well, if Liberal in-fighting does not cool down in the two weeks leading up to this appearance, the promise that this fundraiser "is certain to be memorable" might very well come true.

But really, puffins? Joke or not, Michael Ignatieff needs to put that "hiding-their-excrement-makes-them-great-Liberals" comment behind him. Get back on message with "I'm-not-plotting-against-Stephane-Dion-really-I'm-not".
