Deadly Chinese exports: "Countries around the world have been on the lookout"

When Chinese toothpaste was discovered to be thickened with radiator coolant, authorities around the globe went on alert. The FDA has now discovered this poisonous toothpaste in the USA.

Americans are being told that "Product of China" means "Throw in the Garbage", at least when it comes to toothpaste:

Consumers were advised yesterday to discard all toothpaste made in China after federal health officials said they found Chinese-made toothpaste containing a poison used in some antifreeze in three locations: Miami, the Port of Los Angeles and Puerto Rico.

Although there are no reports of anyone being harmed by the toothpaste, the Food and Drug Administration warned that the Chinese products had a “low but meaningful risk of toxicity and injury” to children and people with kidney or liver disease.

The United States is the seventh country to find tainted Chinese toothpaste within its borders in recent weeks.

Many brands were discovered to be poisonous:

Agency officials said they found toothpaste containing a small amount of diethylene glycol, a sweet, syrupy poison, at a Dollar Plus retail store in Miami, sold under the brand name ShiR Fresh Mint Fluoride Paste. The F.D.A. also identified nine other brands of Chinese toothpaste that contain diethylene glycol, some with concentrations of 3 percent to 4 percent.

Not surprisingly, you can't trust the labelling:

Previously, only a few brands had been identified by health officials around the world as containing diethylene glycol and all of them listed the chemical on the label.

But diethylene glycol was not listed on the label of the toothpaste found in the Miami store. Its presence was detected only because the F.D.A. began testing imported Chinese toothpaste last month. That precaution was prompted by the discovery in Latin America of tens of thousands of tubes of tainted toothpaste made in China.

But once it was discovered that the toothpaste was contaminated, Chinese toothpaste became Public Enemy Number One all over the world:

Last month, after publicity over the poisoning deaths from the cold medicine, a consumer in Panama noticed that toothpaste in a store listed diethylene glycol as an ingredient and notified the authorities. Eventually it was traced to China, and since then countries around the world have been on the lookout for the product.

Things have come a long way since the mass pet food poisoning.

...has anyone in power checked these 'Loonie' Dollar stores? They sell everything from made in China and I see a few toothpastes and mouthwashes in there when looking for cheap birthday cards.

Is this the same consumer quality the Chinese are exposed to or is this just a special export treat for capitalist hosebags only......although with China's government on a population and birth rate decline agenda it seems logical the communist overlords would quetly allow poisons into the human food chain in their country.....maybe they figured we could use the de-pop help as well?

The wealthy don't buy from dollar stores, so the money they make in dealing with china will out-weigh any minor inconviences such as a little poisoned toothpaste or petfood. Let the importing company take a hit, but in a very short time things are forgotten and the cycle starts over again. Capitalism at it's best!

Another thoughtful, considered response from the Peoples Republic of "I don't give a shit."

The Chinese solution to the problem? Remove the offending poison from the ingredients list. I suspect the next step will be to remove the 'Made in China' logo.

Arguably at 1%, one would have to 'eat' a lot of toothpaste before the DEG would be a problem. Keep it out of reach of small children and pets.

...anon at 6:46pm.

"...one would have to 'eat' a lot of toothpaste before the DEG would be a problem."

I can't help thinking of the boiling frog analogy.

...under the, umm, "No Crap Sherlock" category:

BEIJING — China will license no new Internet cafes this year while regulators carry out an industry-wide inspection, the government says, amid official concern that online material is harming young people.

- the only "harm" the kids will find is there is a world of truth out there besides the Politico Party line...
