Just pondering the details of Farhan Chak's exoneration on the gun charges.
Farhan Chak is the Liberal Party candidate for Edmonton-Mill Woods-Beaumont. He's in trouble for some things he has written in the past that certainly sounded extreme, and for having been charged with firing a shotgun into a club in 1993 after a knife fight:
It also came to light that Chak was arrested in 1993 in connection with the firing of a shotgun into the door of a south-side nightclub.
Chak stressed he has no criminal record.
"The charge that (the National Post) relates to is one of mistaken identity and I was fully exonerated in the law courts."
Chak was charged with aggravated assault by endangering lives, use of a firearm during the commission of an offence, pointing a firearm and possession of a prohibited weapon after the 1993 incident at Barry T’s nightclub. In the incident, a 23-year-old employee was stabbed in the thigh during a fight between several men. As bouncers tried to remove the men, a shotgun was fired over their heads into a doorway.
So what was the identity of the person who fired the shotgun? Chak was very fortunate that the witnesses whose initial statements to police supported the charges decided afterward that Chak wasn't the guy waving a shotgun and the case fell apart because of "mistaken identity".
Chak probably just has one of those faces. The kind that means he is easily mistaken for someone else. That's got to be tough thing to put up with. Too bad in that case he was mistaken for someone dangerous.

Still, Chak has to be aware that the Liberal Party application form is explicit. Any criminal charges, regardless of their final disposition, must be disclosed by potential candidates seeking the nomination:
4.a Past convictions involving other contraventions or criminal offences
Have you ever been charged in Canada or elsewhere, with any crime, offence or delinquency under a statute or ordinance? If yes, please provide full particulars (use a separate sheet if needed), including applicable dates, places, nature of acts or offences, penalties and pardons.
That's a problem that won't go away just because someone's memory has suddenly failed him.

Well isn't that a relief for Dion, he wont have to boot out Farney Chak.
It's down to the people who know him best, the people in the riding.
Anyone really think he stands a chance to win?

Maybe it's not about winning. Maybe it's about running a campaign in order to establish a certain level of credibility in the community.

Hey Steve,
I think there is something wrong with your comment counter - on the front page, it says there are 6 comments to this story, however, (as I write this) there are only 2 comments.

If you did a little SCRATCH AND SNIFF amongst Parliamentalians, you discover many criminal code convictions among them. Following laws and urine tests are for just for the sap serfs of Qannadda, not the ruling crony groups.....

Mike, ya made the same mistake as me. The counter is for the posting is the one above the title.
Or was it below? Beside? Who's counting?
;-)
The one above the title it the proper count.

While the riding had gone Liberal for a number of years when David Kilgour left the PC's to join his brother-in-law (John Turner), it quickly returned to the Conservative fold after Kilgour's retirement. Between political and character considerations, I think the voters in the riding will wish to keep the status quo. However, if Mr. Chak does indeed own a shotgun, I would vote for him to ride beside the stage coach driver to protect the strong box. We'll just nickname him Yosimite Farhan.

If Farney wins wonder if he'll hoist a rifle over his head and fire? Not sure if that tradition is celebratory or a threat.
He's in the right party, that's for sure, no matter how outrageous their behavior, the people still love them apparently.
Even when they can't understand a damned word Dion is saying in garbled English, it doesn't matter. Some will buy a pig in a poke if it has the Liberal stamp.

I find the use of the term 'exonerated' an overstatement in cases like this where multiple witnesses who were positive at the time suddenly have a change of heart when it comes time to go to court.
As a well-known broadcaster who was also a lawyer one said "Being acquitted by the courts in this country hardly makes you Little Lord Fauntleroy".
I heartily agree with Libby's statement about a pig in a poke as long as it has a Liberal stamp. Hope it doesn't happen here.
