The Liberals have announced that Belinda Stronach has lost her critic's position:
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion today announced the appointment of West Nova MP Robert Thibault as Liberal Critic for Competitiveness and the New Economy.
“I am pleased to announce that Robert Thibault has been appointed Liberal Critic for Competitiveness and the New Economy,” said Mr. Dion. “He will play a pivotal role as the Liberal Party continues to press Stephen Harper’s Conservative Government to enhance Canada’s global economic competitiveness.”
Mr. Thibault was first elected to the House of Commons in November 2000. Thanks to his hard work and his commitment to his constituents, he was re-elected in 2004 and again in 2006.
Mr. Thibault has served in a number of important positions within former Liberal governments, including as Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
“Canada’s economic competitiveness in the global marketplace is an essential part of our success both today and into the future,” said Mr. Thibault.
“I am eager to take charge of this important portfolio and do my part to ensure the Liberal Party continues to put forward an effective and responsible opposition to the Conservative government.”
Though it doesn't say so, Belinda Stronach was the former Critic for Competitiveness and the New Economy. She announced that she was going to quit politics to return to Magna Corporation, but that she would stay on until the next election is called. We don't know why she was relieved of the position. Maybe she asked to be relieved, or perhaps Stephane Dion took the job away. But I would have expected some mention of her in the press release. Even just thanks for the work she had done in this role. But no mention of Belinda Stronach at all. Like she's become an unperson.
