Leader

Mark Holland has two statements on his website -- each depicts a different set of events. One must be a lie.

Main Story

Mark Holland, the Liberal Party MP from Ajax-Pickering has a problem on his hands.

Just check these two statements on his own website:

First, on the matter of documents which he says showed Conservate MP and Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day paid for his seat and so must resign (allegations that have gained no traction whatsoever), Holland says he received the documents from an anonymous source:

Mr. Holland was referring to documents that came anonymously into his possession indicating that former MP for Okanagan-Coquihalla Jim Hart requested compensation totalling $22,674 in exchange for resigning his position to make way for Mr. Day, the then newly-elected Leader of the Canadian Alliance.

Anonymously? Not so, as Mark Holland changes his tune later:

“At no time did I read the contents of any of the personnel files,” says Holland. “In fact I had no contact whatsoever with those files other than at the news conference. I’m told the personnel files were found lying in drawers and that once researchers discovered what they were, they were put aside and not read.”

Holland says other non-personnel files were examined more closely by researchers. He has only seen copies of a few documents pertaining to payoffs to former Canadian Alliance MP Jim Hart to resign his seat so that then leader Stockwell Day could run. Holland immediately turned copies of these over to the RCMP, asking them to investigate whether such a payoff violated the Criminal Code.

See, when you make one statement of fact, then later issue another statement with an entirely different set of facts that contradicts the first statement, one of the statements must be untrue.

And that means that you are a liar -- either when you issued the first statement, or when you issued the second statement.

Once exposed as a liar, it's hard to believe anything you say.

Of course, that doesn't keep the Liberals from trying to get away with a lie.
