Garth Turner, once a Conservative MP, had a clear position on Kyoto. Since switching to the Liberal Party, he has been forced to hide his strongly held views of the past.
The old Garth Turner Guide on the subject of Kyoto:
The new Green Plan
.. Canada's Conservative government has just finished writing the most comprehensive and environment-friendly action plan of the last twenty years, aimed at addressing the serious problems of global warming, deteriorating air quality and threats to our fresh water.
.. We have made the wise choice not to pursue the path of the Kyoto Agreement which would have seen Canada send billions of dollars to other countries in order to purchase pollution credits. That complicated and flawed plan would have cost taxpayers a bundle, while actually doing nothing to address our own environmental issues. Please contact me at the House of Commons, K1A 0A6, and I will send you a copy of the plan, for your comments.

That's right, the criticism of Kyoto has just evapourated:
This booklet is being made available to all Canadians, free of charge, on the Internet, available for download. This is my preferred method of distribution because, of course, it is the least wasteful, and allows me to constantly update it with new information. One of the great technological advances of our time has been the democratization and globalization of the Internet, which allows us to do digitally that which took great natural resources and vast quantities of energy to accomplish in the past.
Garth is right. In the past, it would take a great deal more resources to alter your political views to fit your current circumstances. Who knew political opportunism could be so energy efficient in this day and age?
But seriously, one wonders just how Garth has decided that Kyoto would not cost billions and was no longer deeply flawed. Changing your mind ought to be a lot harder than changing an electronic document.
