The problem with pet food continues, weeks after the main culprit, Chinese wheat gluten contaminated with melamine, was taken out of the picture. Bizarre coincidence, a sign that the wheat gluten was more widely distribured than thought, or more disturbingly, that it wasn't the feed at all, and that the problem is still out there.

Natural Balance Pet Foods is being taken off the shelves:

The Food and Drug Administration has announced Natural Balance Pet Foods is recalling two kinds of pet food after getting reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems.

The recall includes all date codes of Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food. The company doesn't know the cause of the problem, but said it's focused on one particular lot.

Natural Balance Pet Foods said it's working with the FDA to investigate the matter and is urging consumers to not feed either product to their animals.

Right now I'm betting on an unrelated and unfortunate coincidence, but I'm not betting the farm on being right.

The horror at Virgina Tech has taken the focus of the media elsewhere, and rightfully so. Meanwhile the FDA needs to be hard at work to determine what exactly is going on, and what risks are posed to the human food supply.
