Jumping to the defence of Belinda -- CTV makes the correction (almost)

Earlier this afternoon, CTV reported on how Belinda Stronach had been eclipsed in the Liberal Party lineup. In that report, CTV Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife said that, among other things, Belinda Stronach did not have a critic's job.

That's simply not true. Belinda is the Critic for Competitiveness and the New Economy. A few hours later, and CTV has corrected their story.

Well, almost.

Here's the original text which formed part of my story from earlier this afternoon:

However, the political future of Belinda Stronach -- one of the Liberals' most prominent female MPs -- has come into question in Ottawa recently, Fife said.

"She has been more or less eclipsed since the Liberal leadership race. She doesn't have a critic's job, she rarely ever gets up in the House of Commons to ask questions, and people here in Ottawa are wondering whether she is going to run again for the party," Fife said. [emphasis added]

Now the story reads differently:

However, the political future of Belinda Stronach -- one of the Liberals' most prominent female MPs -- has come into question in Ottawa recently.

"She has been more or less eclipsed since the Liberal leadership race," said Fife. "She rarely ever gets up in the House of Commons to ask questions, and people here in Ottawa are wondering whether she is going to run again for the party."

There's no mention of the correction, and I don't think it's necessary. I would love to know who caught the mistake -- maybe they spotted my story?

Chances are, though, that a Liberal Party media checker spotted the mistake and called CTV by phone to insist on the correction.

Still, it's good to see how fast the media can respond to a mistake. Well done.

Well, almost. They missed the video:

Robert Fife makes a mistake by saying Belinda Stronach does not have a critic's position in Stephane Dion's shadow cabinet.

I guess there are limits. It's easy to correct some text. But a video image -- that's tricky.

Liberals Abandon A Sinking Ship

By the time of the 1993 federal election, the Progressive Conservative Party had melted down. Despite the short lived boost in the polls that Kim Campbell had given the party, it was clear it was headed for an historic defeat. The clearest indication of the coming defeat was the mass of PC MPs who were leaving politics or even the PC party itself.

In the 5 years from the 1988 to the 1993 election, 70 out 169 MPs, 41% were no longer standing for re-election for the PC Party. Despite the brave words during the campaign, those who knew best had found better things to do than try for re-election as Tories. They took patronage appointments, they joined other parties, they retired from politics and took jobs in the private sector or simply to spend more time with their families.

The historic number of "retirements" foreshadowed an historic defeat. It was unique in Canadian history and we would never see it again. Or so we thought.

Undetected by the Ottawa Press Gallery, without comment from political pundits, beneath the noses of the Canadian public, there has been an historic number of Liberal "retirements". In the last 5 years, 75 out of 172 Liberal MPs, 44% have left or have announced that they will leave their jobs as Liberal MPs. This does not count all the Liberal MPs who have lost their seats in the 2004 and 2006 elections. In the last 5 years, 75 Liberal MPs have "taken patronage appointments, joined other parties, retired from politics and took jobs in the private sector or simply to spend more time with their families."

No doubt that CTV can't get their facts right. This is the same "news channel" that considers Eric Margolis an "expert on terrorism"
