Canadian "denier" threatened with death -- and it is not reported in Canadian news

A Canadian scientist questions the science of climate change, and he begins receiving death threats.

I read about it in a British newspaper. Isn't this newsworthy in Canada?

I found this in a British paper:

Scientists who questioned mankind's impact on climate change have received death threats and claim to have been shunned by the scientific community.

They say the debate on global warming has been "hijacked" by a powerful alliance of politicians, scientists and environmentalists who have stifled all questioning about the true environmental impact of carbon dioxide emissions.

Timothy Ball, a former climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg in Canada, has received five deaths threats by email since raising concerns about the degree to which man was affecting climate change.

One of the emails warned that, if he continued to speak out, he would not live to see further global warming.

I just did a scan of Google News, and now Canadian news source is carrying this story.

Neither of our news aggregators, Bourque or National Newswatch, have linked this story.

Certainly nothing is appearing at the major news websites -- CBC, CTV, and so on.

If you don't shine a light on this sort of thing, it continues and festers. I'll do my part, but this blog reaches only so many people.

Do we need any more proof Global warming /Climate change is an
out of control Political Activist Movement? It's based on Junk science
fueled by endless propaganda from the likes of Gore, who is a
show boater and opportunist with no background to fully
understand what he's spouting to the masses. The man refused to
appear on talk shows with anyone of opposing view, that says he
doesn't know his stuff!!

It mimics the fanaticism of a religious cult and threatening a
person with opposing views means it's reaching the end game in
desperation. They see their credibility sinking , paranoia taking over.

It is a very disturbing turn of events and let's hope the threats
can be traced to source.

It's worrisome to hear musings from Maurice Strong when he asked
"Isn't the only hope for the Planet that industrialized civilizations
collapse? Isn't it our responsibility to bring that about?"
Scary thoughts from the Grand Daddy of Kyoto!

i sure hope mr. ball has turned those emails over to the police. thats serious business.

Posted by: spike at March 12, 2007 07:50 AM

I see no proof that Ball received death threats. Maybe he's just lying about it, like he lies about his credentials.

Doesn't anyone who's ever been mentioned in a newspaper receive death threats? Especially on a topic such as this? Who would the climate change deniers send death threats to? The thousands of scientists that worked on the IPCC report? Who has that many stamps?

I bet Al Gore receives death threats, but he doesn't seem to complain about it.

Posted by: Jonny_eh at March 12, 2007 08:16 AM

Toilet Person:

Speaking about credentials, what are Gore's
credentials ? What are Suzuki's on the science of climatology?
Last time I checked he has training in the field of Genetics. There
could be a connection, it sure doesn't make him an expert .
He certainly has a cult following which is what fuels this
massive out of control political movement based on propaganda
in it's most insidious form.

Hey, I've got an idea: how about everyone get off their collective asses and send an email petition to Harper to publicly renounce climate change science and cut off all funding. Either Harper is horribly misinformed or he's a vote whore; either way, he campaigned on honesty and he should be listening to his base. No one here puts their money where their mouth is, apparently.

Posted by: pdoff at March 12, 2007 09:41 AM

Hey Toilet,

How does Tim Ball lie about his credentials? He has a PhD in Climatology; that is a known fact. I sat in his climatology classes at the university of winnipeg back in the early 90s. Has he ever said otherwise?

Posted by: Gobifish at March 12, 2007 09:50 AM

So now the junk science cult has moonbat "enforcers" ......man I wish Hunter Thompson could see this....I'd ask him if he thought it was getting too wierd for even an acid burn-out to cope with the moonbattery that prevails today.

Liz J - Suzuki has no credentials, and so his opinions have no more authority than yours or mine. Yet, Kyotologists sing his praises while denouncing the credentials of Kyoto skeptics. It is nothing but the rankest of hypocrisy.

Posted by: Brian in Calgary at March 12, 2007 11:38 AM

credentials.... someone explain to me what credentials algore has that he can be the saviour of the planet and climate change er global warming er etc etc

Posted by: spike at March 12, 2007 12:08 PM

Hey, Mars is warming up too. Damn maritans and their oil sand projects and suv's. Let's send Suzuki and Gore there to check out the causes for that. They could build a huge barnyard there to house all the chicken littles from down here on earth. Send everyone of them on their way in a space ship with only enough fuel for a one way trip.

The average Canadian liberal media member is still criticizing the puritans for the Salem witch trials. That was about 250 years ago.

At this rate, the liberal media will criticize the modern day "puritan" (mother earth worshipper) trying to hang the modern day "witch" (person who rationalizes with facts) in about...never.

The many members of the chruch of the holy kyoto will never admit that they and their messaihs are wrong. They would rather put the naysayers to death. Patrick Moore co-founder of Greenpeace also says that this whole GW charade is shite! He left Greenpeace because when the wall came down, the marxist element took over the enviromental movement to try to force ther utopian will on the rest of the world. Envirofacists ARE the new terrorists and they need to be dealt with!

"Mars is warming" is a not regarded as a myth and is rigorously debated.

Please refer to this article: http://www.marsnews.com/archives/2007/03/02/mars_melt_hints_at_solar_not_human_cause_for_warming_scientist_says.html

Clicking on the "full story" link takes you to the original National Geographic posting of the article. This article is good insight into how the scientific community is viscerally divided concerning cause and effect in the field of climate science. One can say the community is definitely not united in anthropogenic global warming. A quote from the article, "His views are completely at odds with the mainstream scientific opinion," makes one wonder how "mainstream opinion" can be construed as one that is scientifically based.

spike ,
.... credentials ? We wouldn't be debating this issue on the net , were it not for the Goracle . Now get out that credit card and REPENT sinners .

Liz J. shut up, you idiotic wingnut. Until Ball produces evidence of actual death threats, this remains speculative at best.

Janke, go back to talking about Cindy Sheehan's vagina. You were on more solid ground.

Posted by: Angry on a Great White Toilet at March 12, 2007 09:34 PM

Death threats are never acceptable, although their newsworthiness is perhaps a matter of debate.

In this instance, because the debate around climate change and any ameliorative programs is ongoing, attempts to stifle debate by threat of violence would seem important.

As for the science, I would encourage everyone to read the IPCC reports ( http://www.ipcc.ch/pub/online.htm ) and judge and debate the questions for themselves.

Sure, there is some well-founded science involved. But there are also many questions remaining, and many conclusions offered without evidence. For example, any relationship between the latitude of the North American Jet Stream and the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere (direct or indirect) remains unclear.

Science should always be open to questioning, and that questioning should never result in threats of violence.

Will someone please flush the TOILET.

The Mars is warming theory is actually a hypothesis that is not supported by enough evidence. Of course scientific theories should be questioned, that's how science works. But I've been seeing this split down political lines. Why are conservatives relentlessly attacking mainstream climate science? I did too for the longest time, but the evidence for anthropogenic global warming is too overwhelming. I wouldn't say global warming denial is like Holocaust denial (as a Jew I find that offensive) but it would be the same as denying that black holes exist (even though we can't see them).

It's good that hypothesis are being put out there, but we should not be so quick to accept them merely because we agree with their conclusions.

Quote from the article:
"Perhaps the biggest stumbling block in Abdussamatov's theory is his dismissal of the greenhouse effect, in which atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide help keep heat trapped near the planet's surface.

He claims that carbon dioxide has only a small influence on Earth's climate and virtually no influence on Mars.

But "without the greenhouse effect there would be very little, if any, life on Earth, since our planet would pretty much be a big ball of ice," said Evan, of the University of Wisconsin. "

But "without the greenhouse effect there would be very little, if any, life on Earth, since our planet would pretty much be a big ball of ice," said Evan, of the University of Wisconsin. "

The operative words being "greenhouse effect" which is comprised of several greenhouse gases. CO2 making up only 0.05% of the gases and water vapour making up about 97%.

Lets see..."Until Ball produces evidence of actual death threats, this remains speculative at best." Hmm, just what we have been saying about Global Warming, no?

Oh and BTW Toilet; "Idiotic wingnut" would be ad hominem attack. Obviously not in keeping with the spirit of intelligent debate.

Is there a way we can put a troll like Toilet on ignore? He seems totally incapable of entering into a serious dialogue with people he disagrees with without resorting to personal abuse.

The entire 1-1/2 hour BBC program was on youtube for a couple of days, but has been removed. However, it was reposted in 10 ten minute segments starting at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6IPHmJWmDk

This program has some really good interviews with many senior Canadian scientists, plus Patrick Watson, formerly of GreenPeace. I've love to know how to collect the 10 bits into one .avi file for burning onto a DVD, but I'm not that skilled a video geek to do this. Any suggestions?
