Leader

In what can only be described as disastrous news for the Liberal Party, CTV News last night led off with a special report revealing that polling numbers show that the Liberal Party is tanking at the polls. More importantly, though, it seems that the charge to the political basement is being led by Stephane Dion personally, who is not seen as a leader by Canadians. On the other hand, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's personal numbers continue to climb.

Main Story

Watch the whole report. It shows that Stephane Dion has been an unmitigated disaster as leader of the Liberal Party. His leadership numbers have completely tanked. He can't even claim to own the "green" file. But worst of all, he has utterly failed to knit the Liberal Party together. Robert Fife of CTV News says at the end of the piece:

I've been getting phone calls from Liberal MPs who are very upset. They think Mr Ignatieff, who by the way is a very legitimate star in the House of Commons, is getting too much air time. They also believe that Mr Ignatieff's supporters are getting too much air time in Question Period, and there is a lot of grumbling. They're saying, "Who's the leader? Stephane Dion or Michael Ignatieff?" The Liberal caucus is starting to come apart at the seams.

Seems like that comparison of the Liberal caucus reaction during Question Period is right on the money.

If Stephane Dion is ousted as leader in the next short while, which is looking like a distinct possibility, he will be relegated to the status of footnote in Liberal Party history. Hey, that will make it two in a row for the Liberals.
