Do restaurants really suffer from not allowing people to smoke in them? I would think that not smoking would cut down on time spent at the table, increasing turnover and therefore increasing restaurant volume. The bars, on the other hand, may well see a decrease in drinking dollars spent because we like to mix our vices.

The theory on smoking in restaurants (at least, as set out by restaurant owners when I used to complain about the shitty tables allocated to non-smokers back in the day) is that although smokers slow the turn, they tend to buy high-margin deserts and drinks (ie, liqueurs and coffee-drinks) as they smoked after a meal. This improvement in margin (and gross revenue) made them more attractive customers than the non-smokers who bought (low margin) food items and then departed, even if the restaurant could get an extra turn on the table. I don't know whether there was much empirical evidence, but a couple of restaurant managers had similar responses; it is either a fact, or a commonly-accepted myth in the industry.

The other argument about the effect of smoking bans on restaurants is that if smokers simply decide to stay home because they can't enjoy a meal without a cigarette, then turning tables faster doesn't help, since they are turned to sit empty. I have a tougher time with that assertion (not that I am all that convinced by the "liqueur argument") based on anecdotal observation: smoking is banned in public places in BC, and restaurants still seem about as busy as ever.

As another Ontarian, I never voted for McAsswipe and never will. I agree with Stepen's comments it will be our fault if this bunch of thieving thugs get in again. Always said that this lot was more dangerous to Ontarians than the federal liberals with all their corruption.
As for whether restaurants and bars are hurting because of the ban is beside the point, it is the hypocrisy of it all. Most bars already had air con rooms set aside, at great expense, under rhe previous law, but were told by McAsswipe they were now illegal. Also it is not just old folk who cannot enjoy a smoke in old folks homes but vets also. People who put their lives on the line so these thugs of The ScumBag Fascist Party of Ontario could enjoy freedom to take away others freedoms. People who have more guts in their little finger than the whole bunch of these snivelling cowards.

Sadly we cannot expect much more from the Ontario Conservatives. They were 100% behind the Liberal pay increase for MPPs--my MPP(Con) used the excuse that they 'don't get a pension'so they deserve the raise.

Although anecdotal, every restaurant owner and experienced waitress reports that smokers generate far more revenue per table. The smokers tend to be more gregarious, staying longer and drinking more. High turnover is great at McDonald's, but bars and restaurants prefer high margin to high turnover.

Now, the smokers want to get out, to have a smoke. At many parties I've been to, the real party is outside where the smokers congregate.
