From the Globe and Mail:
George Kunz, the man who alleged there were irregularities in the Michael Ignatieff's Liberal leadership campaign — a complaint that was dismissed by the party yesterday — is a supporter of rival candidate Joe Volpe.
The Burlington, Ont., man is listed as a Volpe supporter on a ballot to choose delegates to attend the party's leadership convention in Montreal in December.
Since filing the complaint, which alleged that 48 members in Mr. Ignatieff's Etobicoke-Lakeshore riding had not paid their own membership fees, Mr. Kunz has made himself scarce.
The Liberal Party cleared Ignatieff, but fined Joe Volpe $20,000 for the problems discovered by the Toronto Star.
Oddly enough, it looks like Kunz himself filled out his membership form with incorrect information:
A Liberal party membership list obtained by the Globe shows that Mr. Kunz joined the party on June 23, 2006, about two weeks before the deadline for new members who want to vote for delegates to the leadership convention in December.
The phone number listed on Mr. Kunz's membership is for Southern Ontario Racking, a manufacturing plant one block from Mr. Kunz's apartment. A receptionist for the company said there was no one at the factory by the name George Kunz.
In fact, Kunz might not even exist:
Several Burlington Liberals, including riding association president George Mancini and former Member of Parliament Paddy Torsney, said they were not familiar with the name George Kunz.
When confronted with the allegation that someone fabricated the identity of George Kunz as part of a smear campaign against Michael Ignatieff, the Joe Volpe campaign issued an angry denunciation, suggested that such allegations were motivated by a deep-seated antipathy to Italian-Canadians, and released this picture of George Kunz to quell such rumours:
