Leader

Marsha Akman was revealed to be the name behind the website StopIggy.com, dedicated to stopping Michael Ignatieff from becoming leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Based on some discussions with Liberal insiders, the feeling was that Marsha Akman was not really behind the website, but that her name was being used to divert attention behind the real website authors.

I've been doing more research on Akman, and I'm reconsidering the viability of that theory.

The following is important information for those who care about the environment, social justice, peace and human rights and want to do something about it.

USE THE SYSTEM!

In an election you get one vote. Depending on the population, your vote may count as one in a hundred thousand. As a member of a political party you could have three, six, or more votes in the system. Your vote could be in a 1:50, up to a 1:500 ratio in riding votes and approximately 1:3,500 in a leadership convention.

NATIONAL PLAN OF EFFECTIVE ACTION

We would like you to join the party for two years. Within the two years all you have to do is go to one meeting -- the meeting that nominates the delegates to the party convention. Further participation can include talking to your friends and family and getting them to join, or possibly becoming a riding organizer, or a board member and/or delegate.

A delegate votes for the national party executive and votes for resolutions at policy conventions. Enough delegates to a leadership convention will have a definite influence on who may be the prime minister of Canada.

To become a delegate is very simple. First, join the political party and you will become a member of the riding association. As a riding member you vote for the convention delegates. In addition, you vote for board members, and eventually, for your choice of the party candidate in an election.

We can make the system work for everyone, by being involved and organized in the democratic political process!

IF THE PEOPLE LEAD, THE LEADERS WILL FOLLOW!

The site was created by Marsha Akman. The site is date as last modified in March of 1999, and I've been able to confirm the content as being present as far back as August 2002.

The idea of using delegates as a means of pushing an agenda is heavily promoted on the StopIggy site as well. The StopIggy strategy is far more fleshed out, but I don't think it's a stretch to think that Akman wrote both pages. She's had quite some time to think about the delegate system.

Does this mean that the idea that StopIggy.com is a concoction of one of the rival leadership campaigns is dead in the water? Not at all. There is still the problem of the membership list. It has been reported that the party is investigating just how Akman got her hands on the confidential membership list to send out her mass emailing on August 22.

The only way to get that list is for a member of a leadership campaign to give it to you.

What it does mean, though, is that Akman probably knows much more about what is going on behind the scenes. Hardly a puppet, she is quite possibly deeply involved and well connected.

I'm surprised no one in the media has tracked her down to ask her some pointed questions.

If it helps, she can be reached at nufisnuf@pubnix.net by email, or at (514) 487-4305 by phone. No, I didn't look up her phone number. She helpfully provided it at this website -- see action #10.
