Dawson College in downtown Montreal was the scene of carnage today:
A gunman with a Mohawk haircut and black clothing opened fire inside Montreal's Dawson College on Wednesday, killing one woman and wounding 19 others.
Police had earlier believed there were as many as four gunmen, as shots reportedly continued to be heard.
The female victim, believed to be 18-years-old, died from her wounds in hospital. Five people admitted to Montreal General Hospital remain in critical condition, four are listed in serious condition and two are stable.
Dawson College is in the Westmount area of Montreal. It is an anglophone school. It also caters to the large Jewish population in the area. The college is less than a kilometer from Shaar Hashomayim, the largest synagogue in Canada.
The college offers a Jewish and Israeli studies program.
Unlike other schools, Dawson College seems to be free of the pro-Palestinian, anti-Israeli tension:
Montreal Jewish students, at both CEGEPs and universities, are developing short-and long-term strategies, he said, although the situation varies from campus to campus.
At McGill, for example, Shostak said Jewish students faced a "bit of a scare" when leftist, pro-Palestinian elements sought - unsuccessfully - to take over the student government.
Shostak said that there is "not much" pro-Palestinian activity at the Dawson College CEGEP.
Am I jumping to conclusions? No, because I have not concluded anything. But taking aim into a large crowd with no apparent specific target sounds familiar.
