Recall that Ken Hill, successful entrepeneur on the Six Nations Reserve, owner of the Grand River Enterprises cigarette manufacturing company, was arrested on two charges of assault following a violent confrontation at the Caledonia barricade on June 4. He was picked up on June 22.
I have wondered why a successful businessman is rioting at a barricade over some land. I have pointed out that Ken Hill and his associates have longstanding interests in bringing gambling into the reserve (under their control). Could there be links, especially with the interests the Mohawk Warriors have in gambling?
In any case, Hill was released on bail, and was told to appear in court on July 19.
On a serious charge of assault, with access to large amounts of funds, and with the political implications of the Caledonia land claim, do you think it would be much to ask of Ken Hill to stay close to home, and not to leave the jurisdiction of the courts until the charges were resolved?
Perhaps...oh, I don't know...put off any trips to Germany?
Germany?!
The article is dated July 5, and says the opening ceremony was on the previous Thursday. That would have made it June 29, a week after he was arrested and released.
Is Ken Hill making the trip back home? For all I know, he has already come back, and there is nothing to worry about. But if he intended to avoid coming back to Canada for a spell, Hill's partner Jerry Montour explains why Germany might be the place to be:
Germany opened its arms to us. Your government worked with us to make this happen. For our first venture into Europe we couldn't have picked a more friendly or progressive place. [emphasis added]
Now if I was an aboriginal and wanted to claim asylum in a comfortable country, I could do worse than pick Germany. Bring up Canada's "genocidal" treatment of First Nations people, and you are sure to strike a chord with Germans. Germans are understandably sensitive to accusations of genocide. Throw in some "green" references (pretty easy for an aboriginal who knows a thing or two about public relations), and in no time you'd have a crowd of German political figures willing to stand behind you at a podium, each eager to take turns demanding that the German government protect you from the evil pro-Bush Conservatives in Ottawa (even though the federal government has nothing to do with this directly).
I'm just saying expecting people awaiting court dates on serious charges to stay in the country seems like a pretty reasonable restriction.
And what about border controls? Doesn't a serious criminal charge cause you to get flagged when you present your passport at a ticket counter at the airline? Does this mean that if the 17 men currently in jail on terrorism charges had been let out on bail, and then decided to take a trip to Syria, no one would stop them?
Perhaps Ken Hill got permission to go on this trip. Mighty generous, given that GRE seemed to be well represented already. It's not like asking for permission to attend your mother's funeral. If he was given permission, I'd like to know who signed off on it.

It's more likely he crossed the American border at a reserve and left from there. They don't have any real restrictions between Canada and the US.

What is it with you guys? Yes I believe Mr. Hill should not leave the country but why drag Germany into the equation what's wrong with another country sympathizing with the First Nations and calling out North America to defend why they can look down their noses and scream genocide when they themselves should carry a much greater black mark in their atrocious treatment both past and present. Atleast Germany recognized the atrocieties they did and the rest of the world made sure they did so why is it that the U.S.A. and Canada should be exempt from International crimes such as genocide, both cultural and physical as well as the theft of great quantities of land to drive their capitalistic interests and yet they stand in the world communities smug and under the impression that they have accomplished a great thing. Actually I think it is a great idea to let the International communities know North Americas real past and the atrocities done to the original inhabitants in the interests of aquiring their lands for personal gain. The reality is and always will be that Europe's economic power and political power was gained from the lives and lands of others. It is no wonder there are sites like this that will bitch and moan to one another in the hopes that you can keep telling each other that what your forefathers did to others can't be contested but the truth is out there and more and more people are becoming aware of it both locally and internationaly. One thing we keep 'forgetting', is the fact that the Indians embraced the English in Canada, and with our help fought off the Americans who had the backing of the French. If it weren't for us English, President Bush would be the Native's leader and there would be no Canada. Most cultures suffered some sort of cruelty at one time or another. Look at a large number of English orphans who were sent to Canada. Most didn't fair much better than some Natives.
I say Canada paid her debt to the Natives billions of times over...taxpayers give some 12 billion annually for the SN to use without any safeguards or questions. That's a lot of money.
It's time for Natives to grow up...start looking after your children. It's you who let the children live in squalor. Fetal Alcohol syndrome runs rampant on reserves...and you can't blame that on the English.
Any land that the Natives have been given becomes absolute dumps. Ipperwash a once beautiful well maintained park is ruined.
Mr. Hill may get his casino, but I don't know one non-native that would go there knowing they don't have the protection of Canadian laws.
To the natives...grow up, sober up, get a job and pay taxes and help build this beautiful country instead of tearing it down. If you really did 'love the land' you never would have burned tires and poured gasoline in those basements.

Canada does not have enough money to pay out what is owed to the natives they don't teach you guys that in school do they. grow up and have some respect. Who lived here befor your people crossed the ocean. Why don't you guys go home. To anybody that don't like natives.

For one thing "Leasa", you should get your facts straight before you continue to make an ass of yourself. It was the British who asked the natives for help in defeating the Americans. Not as you stated.
Fetal alcohol syndrome does not run rampant on reserves. Where do you find this stuff?
As far as Ken Hill having a casino open up, I would be glad to check it out. I'm sure he would rather have someone other than a racist like you coming in to his place of business.
Just for the record and so you know, my grandparents on my mothers side were straight from the U.K. (that's London England in case you aren't sure) and my great-great grandmother was Mohawk. After so many generations, I have more of a British background than native aboriginal and I "STILL" would rather sit down and have a drink with the Ken Hill's or Michael Laughing's than I would with a racist like you.

Thank you Ed!
Ipperwash is not ruined ... "where do you find this stuff" ... you cannot ruin the beauty of Ipperwash Beach.
Ipperwash has not been given back to the Stoney Pointers. It is the same status as DCE ..."in trust" to the government. Kettle Pointers are in the mix too.
