For those Conservatives struggling to understand that all MPs are candidates for cabinet, and who can't see the difference between selling a cabinet post to an MP of dubious qualifications in order to stave off a looming non-confidence vote versus putting an experienced MP in charge of a ministry in order, among other things, to provide continuity in ongoing delicate international negotiations, I'll offer another reason to cheer Stephen Harper's appointment of David Emerson to cabinet.
It makes Buzz Hargrove look like a putz.
From a Google cache of a deleted Liberal Party election page:
I especially want to repeat what I said this morning to the Prime Minister. When you look at the record of the minority government for the next 17 months that it would have served the interest of Canadians to continue for another 17 months. That's not in the cards. But if you look at the record, then every Canadian should agree. This minority government deserves to go back to Ottawa, with even bigger numbers. And look at the health care - over $30 billion put back into health care. Cities agenda - the gas tax that will help all the major cities and the municipalities across Canada. A national child care program. Social housing, including housing for Aboriginals. Same-sex legislation, only the third country in the world that had the courage to bring equality before the parliament of Canada. And Stephen Harper wants to change that and doesn't deserve the opportunity to change that. Support for our industries - for the auto industry. Over $900 million in support for this important industry under attack from offshore imports. Support for the aerospace industry. And I want to mention David Emerson, who is not here but boy, did he play a key role in some of these agreements. Recent training agreement, additional $600 million a year for workplace training. All in addition to the bankruptcy act. This has been one of the most productive parliaments in the history of our Canada.
Note how Hargrove goes out of his way to praise Emerson, even though Emerson is not in the room, and even though the meeting was held in Toronto, not even remotely close to Emerson's Vancouver riding.
So let's recap.
Hargrove dumps the NDP in favour of the Liberals. The Liberals lose their hold on power while the NDP gains seats.
Hargrove calls Stephen Harper a separatist. Support for separatism recedes while Stephen Harper builds the Conservatives into a real force for Canadian unity.
Hargrove singles out David Emerson for praise as a particularly effective Liberal MP for his key role in getting the business of government done. Two weeks after the election, Emerson dumps the Liberals and a potential leadership bid that might have enjoyed Buzz Hargrove's support.
Now only if Buzz Hargrove had said I was the worst blogger in the world. I'd probably be the new Instapundit today.

Re. "For those Conservatives struggling to understand that all MPs are candidates for cabinet", can you explain to those who are struggling to understand why Harper, who pledged an elected senate, would appoint Michael Fortier and then land him Dingwall's old cabinet position as Minister of Public Works, also known as the Minister of Pork, what's with the sudden hypocrisy?
For those looking for a change in government, these latest moves - along with Emerson's Stronach-like switcheroo - stink like, well, the Liberals.
Welcome to the Conservatives. Liberals, who wear blue.

Ah, we should welcome Emerson because he plays a key role in doling out corporate welfare to Bombardier and might win the endorsement of Buzz Hargrove.
Well, continuing corporate welfare was certainly the main reason I've been conservative all these years.
Perhaps we should see if Dingwall's available.

Emerson is the most effective person for the jobs he's been given. Harper needs effective people in the top positions because his ministers are all dealing with a Liberal-appointed bureaucracy. Remember the Mulroney scandals leaked by bureaucrats. On effect, the conservatives are considered as "outsiders" to the machinery of government in place in Ottawa. My Father always said" If you are an outsider, you have to be twice as good at what you do to get to the same place."
A similar irony to the one you mentioned re Liberal-grovelling Hargrove is former Minister of Scandals, Belinda, who was on the radio today saying she and Emerson are incomparable. Indeed. He's a Minister today; she crossed the floor in order to not be one now.

Lieberals do not eat their young! Conservatives cannot wait for the first item of business to eat the whole government. STOP IT!

Mr.Emerson has a PhD in Econmoy and he must be the most effective person in Mr.Harper's government.
The Econmoy, despite some beliefs in the Liberal party, is not and will not be a science for activities of donkeys.
The petroleum-based Econmoy must be combined with the most sophisticated and contemporary Econmoy of science and technolgies.
Unfortunately, the cabinet of Mr. Stephan Harper lacks on the compotent economists, who must have good knowledge and experiences in Econmoy.
If we look at the background of the ministers and parliamentary secretaries, they have not the fundamental knowledge of econmoy; some of them have the bachelors in arts, some they have certificates in Law and some have no certificates!
Mr. David Emerosn is not Blinda Stronach, who was dropped out York University in the first year.
Blinda Stronach is not an educated person; even she cannot live with a husbadnd for a life!
Blinda Stronach without having any education and qualification would like to be a PM for more destruction and more GULAG of unemployment and poverty.
Mr. David Emerson is looking for his own interests; he never responded to me as I wrote him in the last 2 years.
Neither Mr. David Emerson nor Blinda Stronach are accountable and responsible; they, both are the servants of profits and powers.
But Mr. David Emerson is an educated and qualified person without any accountabilty and honesty and Blinda Stronach has not any good e ducationn and knowldge but she is very arrogant and uncontolable person.
Blinda Stronach believes she can take everywhere her father and her mother; she use for her own campaigns all wealth and capability of Magna International Inc.
The use of wealth and power of Magna International Inc for being a MP and minister is a kind of the conflict of inetrest; but who cares?
Mr. Dvid Emerson has learned from Paul Martin, he needs to think on his own interests.
He was in the Liberal Party and he learned more and more how to manipulate all things for his own interests.
Now, the Liberal party wants its money back!
Mr. David Emerson will not give any money back as Blinda Stronach didn't gave any money back.
Blinda and David are the fruits of the policies of GULAG of Paul Martin.
When the Liberals deported thousands scientists and academic immigrants into the torture's chamebers of GULAG of unemployment and poverty, Mr. Dvid Emerson was a the major Generals for GULAG.
Mr. Dvid Emerson and Blinda Stronach are rich and influential because they are the officers and interrogators of GULAG of unemployment, poverty and the gradual deaths in Canada.
Please don't expect these interrogators and officers of the slavery and death camps of GULAG to work for prosperity and the rights of people.
They don't believe on any laws and rights; they are looking for their own interests.
They are foolishing people; Mr. David Emerson has a PhD in Ecdonmoy and Blinda Stronach has a rich father plus relations with actors of Hollywood and relations with the politicans such as Bill Clinton.
Unfortuanetly Mr. Stephan Harper does not care how many scientists and academic immigrants are in GULAG and the gradual deaths in Canada.
Mr. Harper will lose the next election if he uses the interrogators and officers of GULAG in his adminstaryion and government.
GULAG will cause the loss of the next election.

Steve, even though we are on the opposite ends of the political ideological scale,
I frequently check into your blog and to observe the happenings of the pajama-ridden landscape of the Canadian right wing political sphere.
Over time I have grown to admire your candor, and I have to admit, at times you have had me laughing like a pre-school child watching a Robert Munsch video, and at other times you have me brooding and cursing like a Toronto Maple Leaf hockey fan at the end of a typical play-off season.
I guess what I am trying to say is, your words and ideas ring the proverbial bell of the collective Canadian consciences, and the resonance of that bell has not escaped the attention of normal, centrist thinking people like myself.
Keep up the good work, and if God truly exists, I hope He blesses you and your work.
