Sloppiness at the Globe and Mail online (but quick response!)

I'm not saying there's a conspiracy at work, but for a simple three letters -- "not" -- the home page gives the person glancing at the page exactly the wrong impression. Of course, the headline doesn't even match, so the confusion doubles. But the sublink, about Gilles Duceppe attacking Stephen Harper on Bill 101 (Quebec's language law) reinforces the suggestion that Stephen Harper is going to try to change the law.
Nothing could be farther from the truth.
The Conservative campaign is one predicated on respecting provincial authority. No meddling, no games. Here's your transfer, go do your thing.
This is the single most important reason Stephen Harper is popular in Quebec. He actually respects the provinces.
You would think that an editor would glance at that first paragraph, and wonder why Stephen Harper is advocating meddling in one of the most contentious provincial responsibilities of all -- language. It certainly caught my eye.
Update:
I sent an email to my reporter friend, who sent it on to someone else, and within 5 minutes, the page was updated and corrected. Now that's new media!!

Reminds me of 940 News Montreal's site about a week ago. A headline/link said "Harper Promises Tax". It linked to a story about Harper proposing TAX CREDITS/TAX INCENTIVES (to encoursge something or other; I can't remember what). I emailed the station, but to no avail. They left the headline in place for another 4-5 hours, then just replaced it with another story.

The Globe & Mail has an active campaign promoting the Liberal Party and undermining the CPC. In particular, if you actually try to post content in their comments section (let's say breaking down Mr Martin's real record on the economy), the chances of your comment being posted are very slim indeed.
At present I would say it's safe to say that more than 50% of my comments (which are all heavy content-oriented) have been censored by their editors, meanwhile there are guys like Sonny Singh Sandhu, Not the Alliance, Etc. who post non-stop slurs against the CPC (as well as the United States for that matter) who have free reign to often post 5-6 pro-Liberal/anti-Harper messages in a single thread.
Bottom Line: The Globe & Mail is a pathetic partisan rag.

Well to be honest, I do hope Mr. Harper & Co. does go after the Quebec language laws. They are a slap in the face of democracy and part of the reason this is such a screwed up country.
My wife grew up in Montreal (Rosemount) and back then as "Les Anglais" they were picked on and such, even though her father wanted his kids to be bilingual and learn both cultures - that's why they lived there for awhile.
End result? All the kids have pulled out of Montréal to Alberta and New Brunswick and her parents live in West Montreal.
Sure, recognize Quebec, sure recognize the language, but not to the point where it overrides a basic human right of speech.
All in the name of preservation. If that was so, what are we preserving?
A house divided cannot stand. The tolerance of Canadians is the only reason this country still functions, but for how long? How long do we bend over backwards to pay for a fictitious "have not" province.
That in itself says something. One of the largest provinces in Canada with a fair sized population base is still a "have not" province...
Hmmm. And we want to preserve that?

Bill 101 should be thrown out. Its anti-democratic, and fundamentally unfair. But its a canadian value, that PMPM should defend.
(didnt quebec use the notwithstanding clause after the law was struck down by the courts?)
The basic problem is, Mr Harper is running for office in the federal government, not the province of Quebec, since Bill 101 is a Quebec law, Iam not sure there is a lot anyone in the federal government can do about it.

Matthew, I agree with your post re:Globe and Mail.
I too, have written in regards to the Liberal scandals, the billions bilked from taxpayers and so on.
I too, noticed that Sonny Singh Sandhu, is free to post his ultra left wing, anti american rhetoric at will. In one thread, there was 5 of his posts slamming CPC and Americans.
It has gotten to the point where I won't waste my time reading the Globe and Mail.

Monday, January 23, 2006 will be just filled with surprising news for all Canadians; the news of loss of election for those, who call themsleves the Liberals, but they are commiting all sort of deception, lies and political shenanigan.
Earlier in the week, I had predicted the Liberals, who are responsible to the expansion of poverty, slums, gangs, slavery and lawlessness in Canada will not win this election.
This issue is too important, why Prime Minister Paul Martin and his Liberals are choosing demagogy and ostentation instead of being honest with people.
The academic immigrants in Canada are saying if Canada is a constitutional monarchy and a Commonwealth Realm with a federal system of parliamentary government, why Chairman of Canadian Steamship Lines, whose secrets for buying of CSL with over $ 160 millions loans from the Royal Bank of Canada are unknown, has been able with his formers employees like David Herle,Terrie O'Leary, Tim Murphy, Ruth Thorkelson and others violate the laws of this country?
What does it mean we say Canada has the strong democratic traditions, when Paul Martin and Liberals are sending thousands scientists and acadmic immigrants into the torture's chambers of GULAG of poverty, unemployment, slavery, humiliation and the gradual deaths?
The scientists from immigrants are emphasizing if many of the Canada's legislative practices derive from the unwritten practices of and precedents set by the United Kingdom's Westminster parliament, why in Canada we have a dictator like Paul Martin, who gives no values to MPs of the House of Commons; why he expects MPs must be the toiletpapers-servicemen in the washrooms of the PMO in the Wellington Street in Ottawa; why he expects Ministers must be the agents for his wills; why Paul Martin and the Liberals are buying some businessmen from every communities and ethnicities and give them some important jobs so that they can collet votes for the Liberals; why the most of the governmental jobs are given by the patronage system for their friends and loyalists and are deporting scientists to GULAG?
As a scientist with a PhD degree in the biomedical sciences from Germany, I would like to say if party discipline in Canada is strong and authorities are claiming even it is stronger than in the United Kingdom, why the Liberal party of Canada is the mother of all sorts of corruptions, ostenation, deception, demagogy and GULAG's character?
If the Liberal Party claims that more of the votes in the elections are considered confidence votes, why so many political games and accusations to other leaders from Paul Martin and his Liberals?
The academic immigrants know the political system under which Canada operates, is known as the Westminster system, was enshrined by the British Parliament in the Constitution Act, 1867 (also known as the British North America Act), but these academic immigrants don't understand what system is when the Liberal Party of Canada and Paul Martin have made the House of Commons as the place for gaining more shares from the national budget for their influenetial and friendly firms in Toronto's Bay Street and other major cities.
We as academic immigrants know that in 1931 the British Parliament passed the Statute of Westminster giving legal recognition to the autonomy of Canada and other dominions, but we don't know when the British Parliament has passed the GULAG's laws for the expansion of poverty, slavery, deprivation and the gradual deaths for the academic immigrants in Canada.
I know that Canada's constitution on that times required the approval of the British Parliament; my question is: Does Paul Martin and his Liberals got the apporoval of GULAG of poverty and discriminatory measures from the BRITISH Parliament? or they are expanding GULAG because of the profits of the big corporations in TORONTO's Bay Street?
