Liberal damage control reduced to lame excuses

In the matter of the allegation of sexual assault made against a Conservative candidate by someone calling from inside the Liberal campaign headquarters for the riding, there have been developments:

An already tense race in the riding of Saskatoon-Wanuskewin has taken a downright nasty turn.

Liberal candidate Chris Axworthy has apologized to Conservative incumbent Maurice Vellacott after someone used a phone in Axworthy's campaign office to falsely accuse Vellacott of sexual assault on a live televised candidates' forum earlier this week.

But then it wasn't Axworthy's fault:

Axworthy concedes the call came from his office but believes someone not connected to his campaign sneaked in and made the call.

Of course, I scoffed at what sounded like a lame excuse, but then a still from the office security video clearly shows the perpetrator defeating the security measures in order to surreptitiously use the phone:

mi.jpg
"Dial 9 to get an outside line..."

Or maybe there's a simpler explanation:

But Vellacott insists that it was an Liberal supporter because someone he knows recognized the voice and says he's prepared to take legal action.

Vellacott's explanation is simpler, sure, but not nearly as much fun as Axworthy's version.

John Duffy tonight tried to say the Liberal Office is in a Mall - before he could finish Mike Duffy started laughing at him along with the Conservative & NDP spokespersons. Mike Duffy then asked him whether he was try to said that someone street person got in and did this. They all had a good laugh and John Duffy didn't like that.

Oi!!!!
These oily, Machivellian operators have become down right scary. Thank God we don't have a well stocked military and thank God we're situated next to the US because their extreme desperation to cling to power is becoming more and more disturbing. I'm beginning to think that the desperation stems from some unknown (to public domain)quantity that's buried deep in the bowels of their 13 years of power and they want it to never see the light of day. But, if Harper wins a majority, then the gig is up, the moth larvae are emancipated and Pauly takes the red eye to Brazil.

Isn't Buzz a breath of fresh air? Me thinks he's no mental giant and that his station in life is a product of bulls$#%, cunning and slight-of-hand rather than a presence of abundant gray matter. I guess he figures that by mixing terms like "devolution" (which, he knows that the average "undecided voter" doesn't have a clue as to what the hell he's talking about: Devil-ooshun? Stephen Harper?, devil?) and "undermining the ties that bind us" (oh, we get that. Canadian values. Break up the country.) will addle and spin the less informed voters away from voting for the Conservatives. He's a charleton and this M.O. has apparently worked wonders for him over the years in the confines of the union movement. Unfortunately for him, and Paul Martin, his hubris and ambition have exposed him to a more discerning audience who are not bewitched by his charm.
Besides, what's the logic? Having an OHIP card or a Nova Scotia driver's license rather than a Canadian version of the same has never been perceived as a threat to national unity in my memory. In fact, come to think of it, until Buzz brought the subject up yesterday, I don't recall devolution being an issue in this election campaign. If it's such threat to national unity that Buzz would encourage voters to support the Bloc rather than a federalist party, why the hell didn't Paul Martin raise the issue in one of the debates rather than the improv he did about the elimination of the NWC? Dollars to donuts that on Monday, the "UFO" that is Buzz Hargrove, in his own desperate attempt to secure and protect his patronage comeuppance, contacted Paul Martin and said "I've got an angle that you idiots haven't explored yet." And Paul said " Christ, anything Buzz, we're being murderer here!"
Thank God for democracy, wha?

4 days 'til whacking day.

For some reason, the "Dirty Tricks" folder doesn't seem to be helping the Fiberals this time. Shame, wot?

What the heck is this "Allegations of Sabotage" BS headline?!!

There is a radio station recording, a Liberal campaign admission, and a self-serving qualified Liberal apology that a phone call was placed from Liberal candidate Chris Axworthy's campaign headquarters in Saskatoon-Wanuskewin falsely accusing a sitting Conservative MP (and former pastor), Maurice Vellacott of sexual assault. Shouldn't the headline read:

"Rape Allegation Falls Flat"

or

"False Sex Assault Charge Made from Liberal Campaign HQ"

or

"Liberal Candidate Denies Campaign Worker Made Malicious Sex Abuse Claim"

or

"Conservative MP Falsely Accused of Sex Assault from Liberal Candidate's Phone"

or

"Conservative MP Wrongly Accused of Rape by Sask Lib Campaign"

or

"Former Pastor Accused Falsely of Rape"

or

"Liberal Candidate Promises to Assist Rape Claim Investigation"

or

"Desperate Rape Smear Backfires"

THis is something the Conservatives really should make a lot of hay out of. Show the Libreals as the greedy, self serving, lying scum that they are. There might be some really good MP's in tha tparty, good people who mean well, but they have been suborned by this dictatorial madman who claims to be our PM. Only 4 days to go and we will see this jerkoff in the rearview mirror. One way or another, this is the death throes of THIS Libreal party.

Remember this happened in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Everyone knows everyone in Saskatchewan. Please refer to the excellent Brent Butt joke about crime in small town Saskatchewan -

Brent - "The robber wore a bellaclava"
Police - "Could you describe the ganster for me?"
Brent - "It was Laliberte"

It was Laliberte, a senior operative of Chris Axworthy.

I love the apology... as with all things Liberal, it's never THEIR fault. Oh, no. Some horse got loose in the hay bin and used their phones without anybody knowing.

Nevermind it was timed to match a television debate.

Nevermind that the call was a smear against a party that threatens the Liberals.

Yeah... like we haven't heard this story a thousand times before. Poor old Liberals are the victims. Boo hoo. I'm crying for them, I really am.

"What the heck is this "Allegations of Sabotage" BS headline?"

Obviously, the whole point of a the above headlines asks the following questions.
Why is a Liberal getting the benefit of the doubt here?
Would a conseravtive get the same treatement in reverse?
Would the above headline be used if this was brought to light 5+ days after the election was over?
Does the writer of this headline have no fear of the recognition of his/her media bias?
When will Canadians realize the Canadian media has an agenda other than witnessing and reporting news worthy items?

Posted by: Pete at January 20, 2006 08:27 AM

At least you see a headline on this story. CKNW, the biggest news radio in Vancouver, is NOT EVEN REPORTING it this morning. The Quebec Liberal candidate quitting also is NOWHERE TO BE HEARD. Lead election story: "Harper denies Martin's Accusation that Conservative Platform Copied from US Right Wing".

GADS I can't believe I am back to being livid at the media!

"Axworthy concedes the call came from his office but believes someone not connected to his campaign sneaked in and made the call."

Yet another example of someone ignoring any personal responsiblity for something under their control. It's his office, ergo, his fault. Period.
