Liberal candidate drops out of race and concedes to Conservatives

savard.jpg Former Liberal candidate Gilles Savard

Reported by Radio-Canada:

Here's a horrible translation:

Jean-Pierre Blackburn could never have hoped for this. His Liberal opponent, Gilles Savard, has conceded, convinced that Mr. Blackburn will be elected representative of this riding next Monday.

The Liberal candidate, who is polling only 5% of the votes, far behind the Bloc and the Conservatives, is recommending that his supporters vote Liberal anyway.

Of course, every vote earns the Liberal Party $1.75 per year until the next election.

Still, who is going to vote for the guy who is not even running? Who has thrown up his hands in defeat?

Who's going to want to vote for tax dollars to go to the party that figures it should just get the money, even without a candidate in the running.

Here's what should happen. If you withdraw, the party should lose the fraction of the money represented by the votes cast in that riding.

Expect those votes to go Conservative.

Update:

The National Post is telling a different story, carrying a story from the Canadian Press. According to them, Savard is telling people to support the Conservatives!

A Liberal candidate in Quebec is conceding defeat and urging his supporters to vote for the Conservative party.

Gilles Savard, the Liberal candidate for the riding of Jonquiere-Alma, is throwing his support behind the Tories to stave off a Bloc Quebecois victory.

Savard pulled out because polls showed he only had five per cent support in the riding in a province that has seen a recent swell of support for the Tories.

The story at Radio-Canada has not changed. Did I translate it wrong? I don't think so.

Update #2:

The truth seems to be somewhere in the middle. From CTV:

A Liberal candidate in Quebec has admitted he is not going to win, and is calling on undecided voters to support the Conservatives in order to defeat the Bloc Quebecois.

Gilles Savard, the Liberal candidate running in the Jonquière-Alma riding, will remain on the ballot and is still asking his own supporters to vote for him.

Initial reports claimed Savard had pulled out and asked his supporters to back the Tories, with local polls predicting he would only receive five per cent of the vote.

Well, I'm back to my original position. If he has pulled out, ballots for him should be considered spoiled ballots, and the Liberals should receive no funding based on votes for Savard.

The Liberal Party: Mourning For Loss of the Election On Monday, January 23

Sometimes it is worth writing someone's political obituary such as Paul Martin ahead of schedule. In the case of politicians in Canada before the upcoming election on Monday, the purpose of a political obituary is to serve to Prime Minister Paul Martin and his Liberals as a warning against the political zombies in their scandals-involved Party, those politicians who are politically spent, politically are those toiletpapers-servicemen in the washrooms in Ottawa or have lost their souls because of being too much with the darlings of the big corporations in Toronto's Bay Street. There are many of these toiletpapers-servicemen in the washrooms of the power around today, who are only the agnets of the wills of CEOs of big corporations and their darlings in Ottawa.

In Windsor-born MP from LaSall-Emard in Montreal, Que (August 28, 1938) was installed in the PMO's Langevin Block, in the Wellington Street of Ottawa since 2003; now he is mourning.

He and his friends are mourning, not only because of their losses on Monday in the upcoming election, but also mostlt because of the awareness of people; he knows very well that people are aware of his vicious policies for expansion of GULAG throughout Canada; GULA G of unemployment, poverty, discrimination, humiliation, slavery and the gradual deaths.

People know he lies and lies and lies for being in the power.

One could almost feel sorry for the desperate and demoralized Paul Martin, who is apologizing successively because of his successive failures during the election. In the last 2 decades, Paul Martin had shown akind of the demagogue face and the demagogue stars from politicians, who really betrayed the trusts of people.

He and his David Herle are demoralized because they know they will harvest LOSS & LOSS on Monday, January 23, 2006.

David Herle, a man whose sister is a candidate of the Liberal Party in Regina, knows remembers his friendship with the captain of CSL as he was barely in his 20s when he first met Paul Martin and offered him a cooperation in CSL.

David and his friend Mme Terrie O'Leary are remembering how interesting and how wondeful was the times when they collected too much profits in the department of finance since 1993.

The blossom orbit of careers for David Herle, Terrie O' Leary, Tim Murphy, Scott Reid, Richard Mahoney, Ruth Thorkelson, Peter Nichloson, Francis Fox and others with the loss of the election on Monday, January 23, 2006 will end.

Blinda Stronach, the crossing floor's phenomenon of May 17, 2005, also is sad because she has no place in the future's government; she must be happy that people in Newmarket-Aurora are not punishing her for her betrayal.

Blinda Stronach compares herself with Sir Winston Churchill and Ariel Sharon for her party switching; she beieves she will be successful as Sir W. Churchill was successful.

Mario Silva, who is unqualified and uncivilized when people are referring to him, needs to be sent into the Kindergarten for playing with kids because he is not adult.

Mario Silva, is a man, who as MP ignored my voice over the last 2 years; he is arrogant.

The political observers have suspicious even if the spinal cord of Mr. Mario Silva is healthy; forget about the healthy brain!

The healthy brain recommends hearing of people and respecting of their rights.

Mr. Mario Silva was one of the most worst MP of the House of Commons, who failed the knowledge of good behaviour. Accountability and responsibility for Mario Silva are anigens and foreign.

I as a scientist with a PhD degree in the biomedical sciences from School of Medicine in Germany, after more than 2 years and thousands applications for employment to all centres, to MPs, Ministers, Senators, Privy Council Office, Public Service Commission, Human Resources and Skills Development, Federal Audiror General, Fedearl Ethics Commissioner and Prime Ministers' office, I have been ignored.

More than 2 years of my life and my professional career have been terrorized and ruined by Paul Martin and his Liberals.

The judiciary system and the patronage appointments of justices from Paul Martin are the issues which are contradicting the independency of the justice system in Canada.

Who cares what I am saying when after 2 years, waste of my life is ignored by the government of Canada?

Who cares when I say, I have a recognized PhD in Canada, but I am ignored from Paul Martin's government?

Do we have any independent judges in Canada, who have courage to investigate this misery?

Is any political leader in Canada, who is honest and ready to hear my voice?

How long is my life? Why terrorizing me? Where is the Charter of Rights? Only for the same-sex-marriage?

Bioterrorism is this, when the government is ignoring the lives of people and commiting to their deaths. Do you have another definition?

I am very dissapointed.

Yours sincerely,

A.Diba, PhD

CBC is in a conflict of interest by reporting on this and any election. The elected party will be their boss.

Unfortunately not every place in this vast country has alternatives to receive their news and only have the one source unfortunately that is the CBC. This highlights why these ridings will stay liberal because of their lack of information.

Just look at the ridings that traditionally vote Liberal. They are the ridings that are the most remote and only have the CBC as a news source.

Fortunately due to the advent of the the internet and the Bloggoshere these people in remote locations are beginning to see the light of the Martin right wing Liberals with their Social Policy by Stealth.

Apparently his campaign manager left and joined the Conservatives.

This brings up another issue - both the Liberals and Conservatives dumped 1 candidate in BC - do the parties get the funding for any votes that those parties receive?

As I understand it, neither the CPC nor the Liberals will receive funding for any votes cast for those BC candidates.

In both cases, that could change if the allegations against either are proved false.

You think this comment coming on the heels of Buzz's foot in the mouth to help the Liberals look like good guys promoting Tories over the Bloc?

I think the timing is quite suspect. I think this may just be a sacrificial lamb.

Unfortunately Angry, this is against the law ;)

"Unfortunately Angry, this is against the law ;)"

I'll take you word on that, and respond with "Ah crap!"

I agree with you Steve but I have a feeling that as the rules were written by the Liberal parrty that nothing will change. Whatever candidate, from whatever party who withdraws SHOULD cede any government support for his party. Given the party in charge right now I'll believe it when I see it.

Cheers

Gerry
