From Liberal Party National Director Steven MacKinnon in a mass email to drum up donations:
Canadians have said repeatedly that they don’t want a Holiday election. But the Opposition Parties, led by an angry, gloomy Stephen Harper, have decided that their political agenda must be the country’s agenda. That, of course, is their prerogative. But surely it doesn’t require, as they spent yesterday doing, calling all Liberals corrupt and drawing a direct line from the Liberal Party to organized crime.
That angry and gloomy Harper and his juvenile name-calling. Well, name-calling is what you'd expect from an angry and gloomy guy. The Liberals don't indulge in angry and gloomy name-calling.
Whatever.
But oddly, dislike of elections works against the Liberals:
Canadians were asked to offer their opinion of the motivations behind recent Liberal announcements, like the purchase of new military planes, special relief for the softwood lumber industry, and training for new immigrants.
In total, 67 per cent said the Liberals were ''only addressing these issues after years of neglect, (they) really don't care about solving things and it is a cynical way to win votes in a looming potential election."
By comparison, 27 per cent said the Liberals had been "working hard for years on these matters and truly believe that these are vital issues that need to be addressed regardless of a looming potential election."
Two-thirds of Canadians believe that the only time the Liberals actually do anything for Canadians is when an election is around the corner. Two-thirds of Canadians believe that the rest of the time the Liberal Party in government is working for itself and its coterie of close supporters.
So if the Liberals are in power, and you want some action on these files, and an honest accounting of the nation's finances, you have to be in perpetual election mode.
Two-thirds of Canadians are beginning to realize what "scary" really means.
