Michaelle Jean: Now Paul Martin decides to stop dithering

From the Ottawa Citizen:

"Once he (Mr. Martin) was in love with the name and in love with the woman, he wanted her appointed as soon as possible," said [Helene Scherrer, the most senior Quebec member in the Prime Minister's Office].

"I remember one morning while we were just informally discussing with the senior staff. I think he watches Radio-Canada and had seen her on TV. It did not take long. I did not have to convince him. He said yes right away."

On the following Monday, Mr. Martin asked Ms. Scherrer if Ms. Jean had been approached about the job.

"I said, 'No, I didn't think you were that serious on Friday,' and that it was a rush. And he said, 'Yes, I want you to see her.'

"I said, 'This is it?' And he said, 'Yes it is. That's the one.' "

Who knew coming up with a choice for Governor General required watching a few minutes of TV, and latching on to the first good-looking Canuck who turns up? Hey, if he had been watching CMT, we might be looking at Shania Twain for Governor General!

Heck, she was born in Windsor, just like Paul Martin. She first appeared on the Tommy Hunter Show. You can't get more Canadian than that!

Well, all I know is that if this appointment goes through, I'm just about ready to wash my hands of this mess we call Canada. I even went and checked the rules for renunciation of citizenship:

4.3 Overview
Section 9(1) of the Citizenship Act says that:
A Canadian citizen may renounce his or her citizenship if:
  • he or she is a citizen of another country or, if the application is accepted, will become a citizen of another country

  • he or she is not the subject of a declaration by the Governor in Council under Section 20

  • he or she is not a minor

  • he or she is not under a mental disability

  • he or she does not reside in Canada.

Damn, I don't qualify. But if it applies to you, check it out.
